Welcome to PSHE at Green Lane Primary Academy

“Through PSHE we grow HEART: hardworking learners, enthusiastic thinkers, ambitious dreamers, resilient problem-solvers and trusting, kind friends.”

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) at Green Lane is all about helping children develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead confident, healthy and responsible lives. Through our PHSE curriculum, our pupils learn how to understand themselves, build positive relationships, manage their feelings, stay safe and make thoughtful choices. PSHE supports children’s wellbeing, personal growth and readiness for the wider world, helping them develop the HEART values that guide our school community.

Why We Love PSHE

We love PSHE because it gives every child the chance to understand who they are, how they feel and how they can make a positive difference in the world around them. It helps our pupils grow in confidence, kindness and resilience, building strong friendships and healthy habits that last a lifetime. Through our PSHE curriculum, our children learn to listen, reflect, solve problems and celebrate their uniqueness — all while developing the HEART values that make our school a caring, ambitious and supportive community.

What Learning Looks Like

At Green Lane, PSHE learning is active, calm and reflective — a special time in the week when children can think about themselves, their feelings and the world around them. Each lesson begins with a mindfulness activity to help our pupils feel settled and ready to learn. Children then explore a theme through stories, discussions, games and creative tasks that help them understand big ideas in a child-friendly way. They work together, share their thoughts, listen to others and learn important life skills such as problem-solving, staying safe, building friendships and making positive choices. Across the year, every class learns the same Jigsaw “pieces,” from ‘Being Me’ to ‘Changing Me,’ which helps create a whole-school community that grows together. PSHE lessons are warm, supportive and inclusive — a space where every child’s voice is valued and their HEART values can shine.

Talking, Exploring and Doing

At Green Lane, lessons are a mix of calm reflection, creative activities and lively discussion, giving children time to think about themselves, their feelings and the world around them. Our lessons bring learning to life with stories, games, role-play and teamwork, helping children develop skills like kindness, resilience, ambition and trust.

What Makes Us Special

What makes our PSHE lessons special is the way every child feels safe, valued and listened to. Children explore themes that build their confidence, strengthen friendships and support them to make positive choices — all while growing together as a caring and ambitious school community.

How We Know Children Are Succeeding

You’ll see your child’s progress in how they:

  • grow in confidence, kindness and independence
  • show resilience, make positive choices and play well with friends
  • build skills in emotional wellbeing, relationships and personal development

Success is not just about knowledge, but about children developing the HEART values that help them thrive at school and beyond.

Ideas for PSHE at Home

You can help by talking about feelings, encouraging problem-solving, and celebrating your child’s effort and resilience. Everyday moments — from sharing stories and discussing events to practising healthy routines and showing kindness — give children opportunities to develop the HEART values of Hardworking, Enthusiastic, Ambition, Resilience and Trust. By modelling positive relationships, supporting independence and recognising small successes, you help your child grow into a confident, caring and thoughtful member of our school community.
