Welcome to Cultural Capital at Green Lane

Learning goes beyond books and lives in exploration, discovery and growth.”

Cultural Capital is the essential knowledge, vocabulary, experiences and opportunities that enable pupils to understand the world beyond their immediate environment and succeed academically, socially and culturally.

It includes things like:

  • Experiences of the wider world through trips, visits, and special events that broaden horizons.
  • Exposure to arts, culture, and history through music, drama, museums, literature, and heritage.
  • Opportunities to develop social skills, teamwork, resilience, confidence, and curiosity.

At Green Lane we provide rich Cultural Capital opportunities so every child can explore new ideas, discover their talents, and grow into well-rounded individuals, ready for the challenges of the future.

Through these opportunities, we nurture our HEART values: Hardworking, Enthusiastic, Ambitious, Resilient, and Trustworthy. These experiences give our pupils the confidence, curiosity, and skills to thrive both at school and beyond.

Cultural Capital in Action

Some examples of our Cultural Capital events at Green Lane:

  • Cultural Day: Pupils celebrated diversity by sharing traditional dress, tasting foods from around the world, and learning dances from different cultures. A day full of colour, music, and laughter!
  • Museum Trips: Year 5 explored old maps of our local area from the Dorman Museum, discovering how our town has changed over time and connecting history to their own community.
  • Creative Workshops: Pupils worked alongside professional artists and authors, developing storytelling, drawing, and creative skills, sparking imagination and self-expression.
  • Music and Drama Performances: From Christmas Nativity plays to the Year 6 end-of-year performance, our pupils shine on stage. They also participate in the Trust Music Festival at the Town Hall, building confidence, teamwork, and a love of performing arts.
  • Community Projects: Children learn the value of giving back through activities with local charities like Teesside Hospice and national campaigns such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day. They also take pride in caring for their environment through litter picks and other community initiatives.

Monthly Themes

Our Cultural Capital programme is carefully mapped across the academic year to ensure progression, coherence and meaningful links to British Values, protected characteristics and our HEART values, enabling pupils to develop a clear understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. Some examples are:

  • Local Heritage: Learning about our school, community, and local history.
  • Black History Month: Celebrating the achievements and stories of Black individuals.
  • Remembrance and Peace: Reflecting on history and exploring empathy and peace.
  • Teesside Heroes: Discovering local people who have made a positive impact.
  • Festivals of Light Around the World: Exploring celebrations like Diwali and Hanukkah.
  • New Year, New Goals: Setting personal goals, reflecting on achievements, and looking ahead with confidence.

Every subject contributes to pupils’ Cultural Capital development, alongside our enriched curriculum. Whether it’s exploring history in class, performing in a music concert, engaging in creative arts, or participating in community projects, all of our learning experiences are designed to broaden horizons, build character, and prepare children for life beyond school.

At Green Lane, Cultural Capital is woven through everything we do, ensuring that every pupil, regardless of background, has equal access to rich experiences that broaden horizons and raise aspirations.
