Welcome to Art at Green Lane Primary Academy
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton
At Green Lane, we believe every child is an artist. Our art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, imagination, and self-expression. We aim to give pupils the skills and confidence to explore different techniques, learn from great artists, and develop their own unique style.
Art is more than just creating—it helps children think creatively, solve problems, and celebrate individuality. By the time our pupils leave Green Lane, they will have a rich understanding of art and design and the confidence to express themselves in their own unique way.
Why We Love Art
Art is a window into imagination, emotion, and culture. We love art because it allows children to explore ideas freely, experiment with materials, and express who they are. Every brushstroke, sculpture, and design is an opportunity for discovery and joy.
From messy play in Early Years to detailed projects in Key Stage 2, art at Green Lane is about freedom, creativity, and the confidence to take risks and try new things. It’s a subject that celebrates individuality while building skills for life.
What Learning Looks Like
Laying the Foundations – EYFS:
In the Early Years, art begins with play and exploration. Children experiment with colour, texture, and form, discovering the joy of creating. They are encouraged to express themselves through their choices and develop their personalities through their art. Talking about their creations strengthens their oracy skills, helping them explain their ideas with confidence.
Moving On – KS1 & KS2:
As pupils progress, our knowledge-rich curriculum ensures full coverage of National Curriculum objectives. Children develop skills in:
- Drawing, painting, sculpture, craft, and digital media
- Exploring a diverse range of artists and artistic traditions
- Recording observations in sketchbooks and revisiting ideas to refine their work
We use the Kapow Art and Design scheme, a structured and progressive programme that promotes creativity, skill development, and freedom of expression. Pupils also learn about great artists, architects, and designers, both historical and contemporary, expanding their understanding of art beyond the classroom.

Talking, Exploring and Doing
At Green Lane, children learn best when they:
- Talk about their ideas and creations, building confidence in expressing their thoughts
- Explore a wide range of materials and techniques, experimenting with new ways of creating
- Do by producing original art that reflects their personalities and learning
Reflection is a key part of our art lessons. Pupils are encouraged to consider their own work and the work of others, learning to give and receive constructive feedback and think about how to improve their skills over time.
