Welcome to EYFS at Green Lane Primary Academy

“Language is the foundation of children’s learning and thinking.” – Development Matters, September 2023

We’re so pleased to welcome you and your child to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Green Lane Primary Academy. This is where your child’s learning journey begins, and we’re passionate about making it a happy, exciting and nurturing experience. Our caring and experienced staff work closely with families to ensure that every child feels safe, supported and ready to thrive.

Why We Love Early Years

The Early Years are such a special time in a child’s life – full of curiosity, discovery and wonder. At Green Lane, we love EYFS because it lays the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. We see the magic in children’s eyes as they master new skills, ask big questions and form friendships. Our setting is designed to spark joy and creativity while supporting each child to develop confidence, independence and resilience.

What Learning Looks Like

In EYFS, learning happens through play, exploration and meaningful interactions. You won’t always see children sitting at desks – instead, you’ll find them building towers, painting, counting conkers or acting out their favourite stories. Our curriculum is carefully planned to provide rich, hands-on experiences that support development in all areas – from literacy and maths to communication, physical skills and personal growth.

Talking, Exploring and Doing

We believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged – talking with others, exploring their environment and trying things out for themselves. Language and communication are at the heart of everything we do, and we provide lots of opportunities for children to express themselves, ask questions and solve problems. Whether indoors or outdoors, every day is full of opportunities to imagine, investigate and create.

What Makes Us Special

At Green Lane, we’re proud of our warm, inclusive environment where every child is valued as an individual. Our passionate EYFS team works hard to build strong relationships with families and create a sense of belonging for each child. We offer a wide range of exciting resources, a well-thought-out learning environment, and a strong focus on wellbeing and emotional development. Our aim is to make every child’s first experience of school happy, inspiring and full of possibility.

How We Know Children Are Succeeding

We carefully observe and assess each child’s progress to make sure they are growing in confidence and achieving their early milestones. These observations help us tailor learning experiences to meet individual needs and interests. We share regular updates with parents through learning journals, conversations and reports, so you can see just how much your child is learning and developing. Most importantly, we measure success not just in numbers and letters, but in smiles, confidence and engagement.

Ideas For Learning At Home

ActivityDescription
TalkingTalking with your child builds their vocabulary, helps them understand the world, and supports emotional development. Chat about your day together. Ask open-ended questions like “What was the best part of your day?” Encourage your child to tell stories or describe what they see around them.
Share Books Every DayReading together is one of the most powerful ways to support your child’s learning. You don’t need to read lots at once – just a few minutes every day makes a big impact.
Encourage IndependenceAllowing children to try things for themselves – like putting on their coat, tidying up, or pouring a drink – helps build confidence and problem-solving skills. Praise their efforts, not just the results!
Make Learning FunMaths and literacy skills can be woven into everyday activities, such as:

Count steps as you walk
Spot numbers and letters in the environment
Bake together and talk about measuring and time
Sing nursery rhymes and action songs
Play TogetherPlay is how children make sense of the world. Join in with imaginative games, build something together, or explore outdoors. Follow your child’s lead and enjoy the moment – it’s all learning!
Stay ConnectedWe love working in partnership with families. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share something your child has done at home, or let us know if there’s something they’re struggling with. We’re here to help and support you too.
