Welcome to Music at Green Lane Primary Academy
“Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Andersen
Music at Green Lane is all about inspiring creativity, building confidence, and helping children express themselves. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to explore rhythm, melody, and song, discovering the joy and power of music along the way. Our aim is for pupils to leave Green Lane with a love of music, performance skills, and an understanding of how music can connect people and communities.
Why We Love Music
We love music because it brings people together and gives children a voice in a unique way. Singing, playing instruments, and creating their own compositions helps children develop creativity, teamwork, and resilience. Music can entertain, inspire, and even challenge, encouraging children to listen, reflect, and express themselves in ways that words alone cannot. At Green Lane, we celebrate every musical achievement – from first notes on a keyboard to performing in front of an audience.
What Learning Looks Like
Our music curriculum is supported by Kapow, providing clear progression and engaging lessons from Reception to Year 6. In the Early Years, music begins with exploring sounds, rhythm, and simple songs. In Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils build on these foundations, learning to read notation, understand musical elements, and develop performing and composing skills.
Our partnership with Rocksteady Music gives pupils the chance to be part of their very own band, playing voice, guitar, keyboard, and drums. Weekly lessons culminate in a termly concert, where bands showcase their hard work to parents and peers, helping to develop confidence, teamwork, and performance skills.
All children take part in weekly singing practice, where familiar and new songs are learnt for performances in assemblies and special events. Our choir enjoy performing together throughout the year, including at Christmas, school events, and our annual Trust (TLLT) music festival.

Talking, Exploring and Doing
Music at Green Lane is active, collaborative, and performance-focused. Pupils explore different styles and genres, learn to listen critically, and work together to create polished performances. From singing in assemblies to performing in concerts, children learn to take pride in their achievements, build resilience, and support each other as performers. Music is also embedded across the curriculum where appropriate, allowing pupils to express their learning creatively.
What Makes Us Special
Our strength lies in combining classroom music, instrumental tuition, and performance opportunities. Pupils not only learn musical skills, but also how to collaborate and present with confidence. From Kapow lessons to Rocksteady bands, choir rehearsals, and singing practice, music is at the heart of school life at Green Lane. Children leave our school with a strong musical foundation, confidence in performance, and a lifelong enjoyment of making music.
How We Know Children Are Succeeding
You’ll see your child’s progress in how they can:
• Perform confidently as an individual and as part of a group.
• Understand and apply musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and dynamics.
• Compose and create original music.
• Listen to and evaluate their own and others’ performances.
• Enjoy and participate in musical activities with enthusiasm and creativity.
